THE POWER OF ATTITUDE Part 2

In my last blog post The Power of Attitude, I spoke about how attitude is a fundamental contributor to the way we respond to our world. I also challenged you to assess your attitude for a week and see how it affects your life.

Did you manage to isolate the attitude behind your thoughts and actions?

Thinking about how difficult that may be for many people, I thought I might follow up with a deeper look at what the word attitude actually means?

Broadly speaking, our attitude is the way we perceive the world based on our experiences, upbringing, role models, environment, observations, learnings and beliefs.

This perception influences what we focus on in a situation, how we feel about it, think about it and then act on it. Which means the way we choose to respond to a situation is a reflection of our attitude.

So why is it important? Our attitude determines how we respond to adversity, overcome challenges, grow, learn and form relationships with others. It also helps shape our reality and affects how open we are to experiences and opportunities.

Our attitude is formed over years, but that doesn´t mean we can´t change it. The first step is becoming aware of what our attitude is in the first place, as I mentioned in the last post.

Here is a tip to recognising it. Our attitude shows up in our actions and can cause us to come across as reactive, impatient, rude, judgmental, negative, blaming others or making excuses, etc. If you can see any patterns in your actions, chances are your attitude is not serving you well.

For some people, just the awareness of how their attitude is negatively impacting their life may be enough to shock them into a reboot. But in my experience as a coach, most people need to learn how to adapt their beliefs, emotions and actions through a series of thought-out changes and by making conscious choices. This is one of the ways coaching helps people stop operating on autopilot and let go of the unthinking habits that sabotage us in small ways over and over again. It provides the How once we have seen the What. Just seeing or knowing what´s wrong isn´t enough. What´s missing is the key to making the necessary changes.
