THE UNDISCIPLINED ARE SLAVES TO MOOD….
Quote:
´The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and passions.´ Stephen Covey, The 8th Habit
This does not mean that all moods, appetites and passions are bad. What it means is that if you allow yourself to give priority to your mood, appetite or passion of the moment, it will cause you to stray from your path to achieving your goal. Why? Because these are all transient, sensory-heavy states, and if we allow ourselves to be governed by them we will shift our focus to their fulfilment rather than fulfilling our goal or purpose. And when our mood, appetite or passion changes, which it will, we will be left with the fallout of the actions that followed.
True passion, however, uses discipline in its execution. True passion takes commitment and focus. True passion is, in fact, a core driver of action, and as such, overpowers temptation because it is our reason to be. But in order to resist temptation, we need to be able to delay gratification (for what we want now) in order to achieve a long-term goal or fulfil a dream (for what we want later).
But for those of us for whom discipline is a struggle, we need more than head talk. Try connecting emotionally to how you will feel when you get to your endpoint, rather than the fleeting endorphin rush of the moment. In other words, distract yourself from the distraction by feeling your achievement as a real emotion at that moment. Level the playing field by bringing both into the room. Then you can make a real choice. We often give up because we can´t imagine being there. So bring it here. Make it real.
