What is Life Coaching?
What I have noticed when people approach me for coaching is that they kind of know what coaching is but aren´t entirely sure…
So I have decided to explain what coaching is and what to expect from a coaching journey/programme so you know if it is the right option for you.
Firstly, to dispel any myths, coaching is not psychology, and neither is it counselling or mentoring.
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:
“…partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.”
But the definition I really like is the one I saw recently, which defines a coach as a “person developer”.
Because that is exactly what us coaches do.
We help people develop awareness of their situation and how they landed up there in the first place. This helps them develop the clarity they need to see their situation from different perspectives and open them up to the notion of choice and possibility. From there we help them define their goals and develop a realistic, achievable action plan to realise those goals.
In a nutshell, coaching looks at where/how you are now, how you got there, and where/how you would like to be in the future. The coach then helps you develop a plan and take the action you need in order to get there.
Making different choices and acting differently depends on you developing a new way of perceiving and experiencing things, which, in turn, will change your attitude and outlook. So, by developing a new way of approaching your life, and you in your life, you will naturally develop a new way of doing things because your motivation will have changed.
The idea behind coaching is that the coach doesn´t dictate the way in which you get there. Coaches develop the art of active listening and ask thought-provoking questions to help you identify and develop solutions to your problem(s). We give you tools and help you develop the skills needed to help you act with intention instead of reacting on automatic pilot. We do this by providing the structure, support and feedback you need to get there.
So if you are struggling with a specific problem that you can´t get a handle on, or you feel like you are stuck and can´t take a single step in any direction, and coaching sounds like it could help you deal with things in a new and proactive way, please Whatsapp or email me to arrange a free one-hour session, face to face or online, so we can chat about options to get you unstuck.
