Where You Look is Where You Will Go

In our MTB skills session this morning we were revisiting a basic but fundamental biking skill – turning – but today was about using that skill to master uphill switchbacks (tight corners). The universal rule governing turning is “Where You Look is Where You Will Go”, no matter how easy or difficult the turn and how basic or technical you move as a result. Because it´s as simple as this: if you look, left your body (and bike) will follow. If you look right, the same will happen in that direction. If you look at the rock or obstacle in your path, you will hit it.

Which made me think that no matter where you are in life, or how complicated your circumstances, the message is still as simple as this: wherever you focus your attention, is where you will go. If you are focused on the past, you won´t be able to move forwards; if you look at the cliff edge, you will be drawn to the cliff edge; if you keep looking at the obstacles in your way, you won´t see the path around them.

The message remains simple: you give things/people/circumstances power by focusing on them. You have the power to change your direction by choosing where you place your focus.

The first step is to know where you want to go, the second is to turn your attention in that direction so you can move towards it with intent.

Coaching can help you to become aware of where you are going and who or what is controlling the bike. And it can give you the tools to help you change direction and navigate around the obstacles that will invariably come your way.
